FAQ

Here are some common questions we regularly answer over the phone. As we seldom answer calls between 2pm and 9.30pm, these should help clear some doubts so we can focus on your child's needs when we do talk on the phone!

All our classes are currently conducted online for the foreseeable future.

TEACHING STYLE

Do you cover Paper 2 in your classes or only creative writing?

For all primary school English classes, we cover ALL examinable areas, including Oral, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Our lessons place a heavy focus on reading and comprehension other than creative writing.

You may have been referred by a parent of a current or past student due to our emphasis on creative writing. We have an in-house style and teaching method for creative writing which is highly recommended.

What qualifications do your teachers have?

All our teachers come from a variety of disciplines, from journalism to history. They each have a minimum of five years of teaching experience in either the public school system or private sector under their belts.

They have been selected for their expertise in the subject matter, and passion for teaching. They all subscribe to the same belief that no child should be left behind and that everyone is deserving of a quality education. Our teachers are trained in our in-house teaching methods.

Online classes are conducted by Teacher Mel. Placement in these classes depends on your child's suitability.

How often will I get feedback about my child’s progress?

We communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s progress. If you have pressing questions, you may also contact the teacher directly.

How are your classes different from other centres?

We prepare our students for life beyond school-based exams and tests. Our motto - Learning is for Life - applies across all class content. Our students go on to use the language skills that we impart in the workplace and real life. To emphasise this, we expose our students to real-world knowledge through news articles, documentary videos, and other relevant media. They are also required to put their skills and knowledge to meaningful use through various assignments.

Our classes are totally customised to the students in the class, whereas classes in other centres work on a standard curriculum across the board. In this way, we are able to fine-tune lesson content and delivery based on each and every class. We refresh our lesson materials on a weekly basis.

CLASSES

What are the class durations like?

For P1 Prep and P1 classes, our class duration is 1 h 15 mins.

For P2-4 classes, our class duration is 1 h 30 mins.

PSLE Prep (P5/6) classes may be 1 h 30 mins or 1 h 45 mins, depending on class size and other specifics.

How about public holidays?

We do not conduct regular classes on public holidays. An optional class may be offered on the day for those interested. During the March, June and September holidays weeks, classes will continue. Please refer to the schedules released at the beginning of the year and beginning of the term.

What is your average class size?

Our classes are on average 8-15 students per class.

During holiday workshops, depending on the course, we have class sizes of 5-20.

What is your homework policy?

We assign homework in order to evaluate their comprehension of what was taught during the class. Homework is always manageable and within reason. Your child should not feel overwhelmed by the homework assigned. If you are concerned or wish for your child not to have any homework, please speak to the teacher and we will make the arrangements for this. Homework should be handwritten and submitted through an online form for marking.

Do you offer trial lessons?

We do not believe that a student can appreciate the full benefits of our programme through one lesson alone. As such, trial lessons are arranged on a two-part trial basis (1 session one-to-one and 1 group session). The per-session fees will be different for trial lessons and any difference in fees will not be refunded should you decide to join after the trial.

As we are fully online now and classes are ongoing, there is a mandatory one-to-one preparatory class for any new student. This is in order to prevent disruption to learning and to ensure a seamless introduction and transition to our online classroom.

What can I expect if my child cannot make it for a class?

Online class recordings will be sent to students who miss live classes for valid reasons -- illness with MC, death in the family, medical issues, official school activity -- parents must request this prior to the class that the child is due to miss. If the request is made after the class has commenced, we are unable to send recordings.

We maintain very small class sizes and can only arrange make-up slots if there is an available slot within the same week. As such, there is limited availability of make-up classes. As the lesson plans are customised to your child’s learning group, we advise that your child attends lessons as scheduled in order not to disrupt the flow of learning. All classes cover different content at different pace. No two classes in the same level are exactly alike.

All notes from the class will be supplied to you should you miss the session.

The course fee for the missed session cannot be refunded or pro-rated, even if there are valid reasons for missing the class.

Parents are to call us to arrange for any make-up sessions required. We are not obliged to conduct make-up sessions for your child if he/she misses lessons for personal reasons (birthday parties, family holidays, swimming tests, music recitals). We will send recordings for up to a maximum of two classes per term with valid reasons in order not to disrupt learning.

Unforeseen circumstances

For online classes, should there be any disruption due to Internet connectivity, teacher's personal emergency or other unforeseen events, we will schedule a live make-up session for the group and provide a recording to those who are unable to attend.

FEES AND PAYMENTS

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, we take a non-refundable deposit for the value of 200.00 SGD. Your deposit is held for the duration of your child’s time with us and will be used to offset fees for their final four lessons with us. Withdrawal from our courses is processed on a term by term basis. It is necessary to complete the term once you have started it. New sign-ups are required to stay for the minimum of one term. This will be communicated to you at the point of sign-up. Intention to withdraw will be processed at the final monthly cycle of each term and the deposit is used to offset the value of the remaining fees. If intention to withdraw is made known at a time when the value of the remaining classes in the term is less than the deposit, the balance of the deposit will not be refunded. If a student decides to withdraw immediately mid-term, or withdraw immediately after the term is completed, the deposit is forfeited.

For more details about the deposit, fee payment, and withdrawal procedure, please see our Terms & Conditions.

What is the payment schedule like?

Fees are calculated on a monthly basis, depending on the number of classes scheduled for the month. We collect the monthly fees on the first lesson of each month (Monthly Fee Cycle).

Do you provide receipts?

We only provide receipts on request and it's important to retain them as proof of payment.
